Nothing too helpful to add to this discussion, but thought this may be
of interest.

Here is what O'Reilly has to say in their DNS & BIND Cookbook:

"The SOA record appears twice in the output because name servers use a
zone's SOA record to delimit the beginning and the end of the transfer."
