I only briefly mentioned switching from RH to Debian.

Doesn't seem to be the case with sarge.  First boot goes directly to X.  I
assume the init system isn't completely set up either.  I tried telling
grub to boot to init 3.  No go.  It seems like the installer script is
just starting X itself.

There must be a way to do a curses based install, even after first boot.
