I plan on using a 3ware 3ware is a good controller, but if you do the reliability calculations, you'll find that software RAID is more reliable than any hardware RAID solution, because you are eliminating a single point of failure. (If your RAID controller dies, the whole RAID array dies.) And with today's processors, there's no speed advantage to going with hardware RAID.
