Dennis,

Make sure that you have installed VMware tools into your virtual
machine, that will help with responsiveness in WinXP. Also, running
VMware in full screen mode will be faster than running it in a window. 

This is probably of little help at this point, but VMware with WinXP
should run really well on the machine you have set up, especially with
as much RAM as you have allocated.

Mouse clicks and numpad/Function keyboard presses should not be a
problem -- at least I've never ran into this with VMware all the way
back to version 2. You may have found a bug (lucky you), so you may want
to consider calling VMware and asking what is up. I hear that they'll
put an engineer on your problem if it is unique.
