Thanks Ed.....
I found netatalk at SourceForge.net and read about it. Yep! That is apparently the missing piece in my system. Wish I wasn't so swamped right now--I'd download it and install it right now, but it'll have to wait while I earn enough money to pay the bills.
Thanks again...

I've got netatalk running on the linux servers and SFM on the NT server as well - perhaps that's why I don't have trouble.

I've got both NT and SAMBA servers for a nework of Mac, Linux & BillyWare clients, so I can try to save the files you send me from a Mac to a Samba share & see what happens to the file names.##### I have a Windows 2000 Server running Macintosh services which has no problem with the strange characters and long names, however, I have a samba share running on FreeBSD and another running on SuSE Linux 9. Neither of these can handle it. They just abort the file transfer when they get to a name they cannot handle when I'm copying from Mac OS. They make no attempt to translate the name.
Of course, I have the same problem when trying to copy to a volume on the Windows 2000 Server which does not have Microsoft services invoked.
