You also don't say what distro you're using. For example, Debian will NOT play encoded DVDs with any of the standard respository versions, since they're compiled without deCSS support. If you're running a Fedora system, freshrpms.net has some working players, and if you're running Debian, I suggest compiling your own from the mplayer sources.
