I haven't been forced to run windows on the job since I worked for
Hitachi Data Systems back in 1998... Veritas guys would've looked
at me funny if I had a Windows box... well.. I think some people
kept them around for Outlook mail and worm collecting.. :-)
HP was fine with linux and of course... working at VA Linux, you
didn't have a windows box even as a game machine.. at least, not
on site... I'd like to see the internal workstation OS break down at google...

Wow, Brian! Cool work history. :-)

As for my comment "if I can still do my job with it (Linux)," there is an unfortunate use of programming on the corporate Intranet at Fluke that is proprietary "Internet Explorer only" in behavior. I have gone in circles trying to get past that junk with every other browser. I can't do it and there's no support from corporate IT. I do have the blessing of a few friends in IT in Everett (and their help), but these aren't the same guys who control the ADO .NET and Active-X manure. That is the reason I liked Xandros Desktop 3 Deluxe. It has CrossOver Office 4.1 and allowed me to install Office 2000 and IE. That was great, except for having the desktop restart periodically when XFM crashed... hmmmm, just like "desktop (dis)integration" in XP. :-(

Additionally, the use of Office 2000 on Xandros was cool. Not that I like MS Office, but we have a lot of template documents that were written in various versions of Word. They are complex documents with a lot of tables, active links to Excel files, and what have you. I tried going back and forth between Word and OpenOffice 1.1.4- doggone it, OpenOffice just isn't quite there yet. I had to spend too much time reformatting things in Word if I edited them in OpenOffice. I use OpenOffice exclusively on my home PCs. But I can't force that stuff on Fluke. One day they'll see the light... <grins wickedly in anticipation>
