That's what is so stgrange - I've burned CDs before logged in as a user with no particular problems - The only difference I can think of is that these are new CDs rated at a higher speed. But that still doesn;t explain the "why".
On the earlier subject - I was able to install Ubuntu with no problems at all - it even recognized my Wireless PCMCIA card and connects to the internet! So I guess I'll play with (Debian) disguised as Ubuntu for a while.
