Half an "ah-ha!" The -R flag works fine when used locally, but fails
when running as a command argument within ssh, which is what I was
trying to do. I'm guessing it isn't reading in my remote environment
properly, which I don't understand, but at least I now know a bit more
about where the problem lies.
