I believe Google's satellite photo maps come from TerraServer
(http://terraserver-usa.com/). The TerraServer web site has information
available on how to write programs that utilize their data base.

You might want to take a look at an interesting bit of software called
USAPhotoMaps (http://www.jdmcox.com/). It downloads photo (and topo)
maps from TerraServer and places them into a variable scale coordinate
grid. Personally, I use the software quite a bit to plan and GPS
navigate off-highway excursions into the country. It's all real
interesting stuff and has been very useful.
