I tried to check it out on snopes.com and others but didn't find anything
which "neither confirms nor denies" the story.  I hate to be a conspiracy
theorist but I see it as possible (albeit unlikely).  I look forward to
seeing the discussions on this one.

Well, I hate to be a nay-sayer, but this seems highly unlikely. 
Discovery of such devices, assuming they are keyloggers or any form of 
spy device, would create outrage among many. That is a "shot in the 
foot" that companies like Gateway can't afford. And, if it turns out to 
be true, then I say we (users) collectively aim our guns well and sink 
their ships! We certainly need that nonsense like another hole in the eye.
