I would say it depends on the SPARC box. I installed Debian on my SPARCstation 20 just a few weeks ago. The installation went fine, and there were much fewer hiccups than in my attempts a few years ago. I wouldn't expect many problems aside from those simply dealing with differences between the platforms. E.g., firmware instead of BIOS, SCSI device numbering idiosyncrasies, console implementation, et al. However, a 100MHz SuperSPARC processor and 96MB RAM make for a rather tedious wait while waiting for such proc-consuming activities as indexing the apt sources. You don't mention what type of SPARC box you're talking about, but I'd say if it's not too fast, or maybe even if it is, OpenBSD might be a better solution. Theo still holds a special place in that dark cavern where most people keep their hearts for that architecture. It's also one of the few *nixen that still support the sparc32 architectures with stability.
