I've for the most part decided to avoid Linspire, though it is probably a good linux alternative to ms - the thought of including proprietary things that practically require purchase (maybe Linspire pays for the licensing of their free hand outs) is against the whole open source movement. For example, i wouldn't mind paying my distro of choice the $50 if it benefitted only them.
Let me know if i'm wrong, but i think this is how it is:
fedora, mandriva, gentoo... all can be redistributed for free... when you get a distro of linux that contains 3rd party programs that require purchas, such as linspire, you are then bound to similar restrictions as windows... you can no t legally make a copy of linspire for friends. again, i haven't looked too deep into that, so i could be wrong. otherwise, i guess i'd just pick up a free copy of linspire when they give it out from time to time. What do you guys think?

I might try the Squiggle, AKA "Freespire" which is basically Linspire without the proprietaries.

Also, there is a project, ReactOs, out that is basically attempting to make a linux combined with wine, to be able to function much like windows, along with installing applications made for windows. I'm sure it's far too early to consider using right now, but i think it might be a success in the future
