If that doesn't work I have a PCMCIA 10/100 LAN card I'm not
using at present.  Waiting to be able to afford a new keyboard
for my old 233Mhz Toshiba.  So you could borrow it. It uses
standard drivers.  I think it was ne2k.  But it'll get you
online so that you can install tarballs etc..  I did have a USB
ethernet adapter in 2003 that worked out of box with Linux.  I
can't recall the name offhand.
