Dennis,

You do not need to recompile your kernel for vmware.  Just do this:

sudo rm -f /usr/bin/gcc
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/gcc-3.4 /usr/bin/gcc
sudo /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl 
sudo rm -f /usr/bin/gcc
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/gcc-4.0 /usr/bin/gcc
