Try 

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

1) Answer the questions normally
2) Say no to Monitor Autodetection
3) select your resolutions
4) select medium and whatever max resolution your monitor can do
5) answer *NO* to "Write monitor sync ranges to configuration file?"

/etc/init.d/gdm restart

xorg should be smart enough to figure out how to drive most modern 
monitors nowdays
