Jim,

The system is running ALSA with OSS API support (the snd_intel8x0 driver
is an ALSA driver).  OSS API is sometimes required for sound -- especially
in games.

Aside from grepping dmesg for "ALSA" I don't know of a surefire test
though.  Let the list know if you come up with a better one.
