I've used probably five different IDE/USB and IDE/firewire enclosures.
In my experience it's commodity technology and works reasonably well
regardless of vendor.
Early on they were pretty expensive, so I got one and put one of those
IDE drive swapping carrier enclosures inside the USB/firewire
enclosure. Then I would just switch the carriers. Nowadays they're
pretty darn cheap, and I'm only surprised that drive manufacturers don't
package them by default for their retail distributions. :)
