Grant and I were looking at doing something like that for CS 432 (I think, Egberts networking class) from my his house down to mine. The dishes are pretty easy to come by, so I think that it would be easy to do. There is also the Pringle can antenna set up to do which is easier to get parts.
It would be sweet to do some software that has auto control. You would almost have to use GPS but essentially make the antenna follow you as you move around based off of data that you send back to some embedded controller in the dish control.
