I am running a Linksys WRT54GS with OpenWRT on it and I have no problems at all.  Before I flashed OpenWRT onto it the Linksys firmware was very stable just didn't give all the options that I wanted with it.

The new versions of the 54GS are now running a different OS and they have some different hardware. Linksys now has the WRT54GL (I believe that is the #) and it runs Linux and is supposed to be pretty good.

The Linksys WRT54G series is probably the most popular.
