Hmmh. Actually, disregard my previous suggestion: given your stack trace, build 
is actually using Saxon instead of Xalan (which means you do have additional 
xalan jar somewhere in there, probably within Ant deployment).
It is then possible Saxon is more strict regarding the given feature of XSLT (I 
am not an xsl expert so can not comment on whether error is warranted or not); 
or that the version used is very old.

Either way the difference seems to be between whatever default setup James is 
using, and what you have.

MSV is a good package too, so if that works well, great. :-)
(I use it for some packages I have, specifically for its RNG support and 
customizability/embeddability).
