You are exactly right, that is the source of the problem!  I did not see
any matching RPMs on sourceforge for Lustre-1.8 and CentOS-6, so built
them.  I added the bench-scan configure option thinking we would do some
performance tuning soon, but didn't realize that it ONLY scanned.

I rebuilt, reinstalled, and the scan is running.  Even without waiting
for completion, we now have entries and stats...
