The main culprit was the ibdata1 file produced by the InnoDB tables.  I
followed the instructions here

http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/8982/what-is-the-best-way-to-reduce-the-size-of-ibdata-in-mysql

and now my DB directory is down to 11GB.
