I now have a pretty good idea about what this does and it seems a good idea.
However, since the implementation is incomplete and there's some pressure
to get 2.7 out, we'll drop this off.
This is going to be part of the public API, thus we also have to spend some
time figuring out how this is used most conveniently.
Thanks for the code, and we'll definitely include this in some future
(possibly already to some 2.7.x) release.
