Refactoring the importer code doesn't seem to be worth the effort,
especially considering that such changes always may cause
backwards-compatibility problems.
Otherwise this issue ought to be ready for review. Code changes and tests
ought to be pretty straight-forward but taking a look at them doesn't hurt.
The updated docs should be proofread at least:
