ok, so after support on IRC (thanks guys) it seems likely that this is down
to an out-of-date docutils (0.6) on centos. creating a virtualenv and then
installing docutils (0.11) and robot via pip fixed things.
i won't close this in case you want to add a check for docutils version or
something. but it's not a big worry for me. cheers.
