Subject: [progressive] I may be leaving the Democratic Party
To: ROBIN BEUGLESS <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
For most all of my 57 years I have been a Democrat, ever since 1960 or 1961 (I was 11 in 1960), needless to say President John F. Kennedy swayed me to be a Democrat. I wanted to belong to a Party who had the excitement and exuberance of possibilities that J.F.K. showed with every beat of his heart. The idea that all things were possible, nothing was too grandiose - not even going to the moon. Even in his Inaugural address his command to "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country", hit a highly positive note with me, and with many Americans. It is called patriotism. But now, what some Democrats have done to a true war hero, Paul Hackett sickens and disgusts me. Here is a man, who volunteered for service in Iraq. He came home a war hero (ala JFK - both of them), and he realized he didn't like what he saw in Iraq or at home. He is honest, courageous, a straight shooter, and he spoke truth to power. But the powers that be in the Democratic Party either out of fear or due to sheer duplicity have silenced a true patriot, in denying him the opportunity to run in the Democratic primary for the Senate. If the Democratic Party doesn't make it right with Paul Hackett, if they don't want to be the Party of the ideals John F. Kennedy stood for -- courage, fairness, patriotism, freedom, defending America (Kennedy's Inaugural quote:.." We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty."), then I no longer want to be a Democrat. And they will not get one red cent from me. Where will I go?? Greens?? Libertarians?? Right now, I can not say, certainly not Republican - I know that much. But if the Dems don't make things right with Paul Hackett, then the Dems are no better than the Republicans, and then we as a nation truly are in for deep, deep trouble. And I'll have no hope for America to be the great country it once was. Now, I can only pray that the Democratic leaders come their senses. There are so many problems that must be addressed...the War, Terrorism, Homeland Security, keeping our borders and our ports secure, securing our power plants, (all of which is not being done currently) the economy, the deficit, the National debt, health care, protecting our personal freedoms, re-establishing friendships and co-operations we used to have in the world. President Bush warns us against being "isolationists", yet he insists on alienating the rest of the world against us, so that if and when we need their help...and we need them now, they can rightly say, "You're on your own!" If we Democrats aren't the ones to work on and solve these problems, then who??? But, like I say...if the Democratic Party no longer wants to be the Party it once was...then I will no longer be a Democrat. Stevo
