PRESIDENT CLINTON, LT. GOV. LANDRIEU HONOR WORK OF ELI SEGAL & CITYYEAR LA
I was reminded of the power of public service last week when Jennifer Eplett Reilly, co-founder of CityYear Louisiana and I hosted former President Bill Clinton at a tree-planting ceremony in Baton Rouge honoring Eli Segal. Segal was the founder of the Corporation for National Service (now known as Americorps) and former chair of CityYear, a national organization that promotes volunteerism and leadership for young people ages 17 to 24. Segal, who was a close personal friend of Clinton, died recently of mesothelioma.
Eli Segal was a man we should all admire and whose public service work we should all strive to emulate. His entire adult life was dedicated to helping to improve the lives and livelihoods of others. His honorable life proved that one person can indeed make a difference.
The tree-planting ceremony was also attended by City Year Louisiana volunteers and supporters, who recognized Segal's outstanding contributions to CityYear, the nation and the world. The ceremony took place at Scotlandville Magnet Middle School, a Baton Rouge school that recently reopened to teach more than 300 New Orleans students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. City Year volunteers will mentor and tutor the students and provide assistance to teachers. I was so pleased that President Clinton attended the ceremony to share his sentiments about Eli Segal and to shine a light on City Year Louisiana. I believe the tree will leave a legacy of service that will blossom into a desire to succeed and serve for every child who attends school here.
The ceremony gave me the opportunity to publicly commend President Clinton for the outstanding work of the Bush Clinton Katrina Fund on behalf of Louisiana and the GulfCoast region. I was able to personally thank him for the attention and resources the Fund has delivered to Louisiana. The Fund granted CityYear Louisiana $1 million to assist with the rebuilding process after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The support will allow CityYear Louisiana to play an important role in the state's rebuilding efforts.
The Louisiana Serve Commission in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor gave a $25,000 start-up grant to City Year to help the organization expedite its plans to place a headquarters in Louisiana. This allowed CityYear to shorten its original timetable to establish a Louisiana affiliate and to help meet some of the enormous needs found after the storms. Over the next year of service, the inaugural 50 City Year corps members will work to galvanize local support towards the long term rebuilding of Louisiana.
I was proud to stand with those 50 inspiring and dedicated corp members on February 21, as CityYear Louisiana celebrated its opening day in Baton Rouge on the steps of the state capitol. Their energy, enthusiasm, and bright red jackets sent a powerful message to everyone in attendance: CityYear Louisiana is here to serve and here to stay.
