If you have never read it read the statement that Bill Mandel made before Joe McCarthy's committee. http://BillMandel.net

Do any of you remember this man?  He was the target of Joe McCarthy and stood
his ground back in the days when anyone different was considered to be a proper
target for persecution.

Friends,

I visited Bill this afternoon. He's at the Kaiser Oakland Hospital, in the East
Tower, room 620. The entrance to the building is just off MacArthur Boulevard,
and has EAST ENTRANCE over the doorway.

Visiting hours are 11am to 8pm.

Bill is in his own room, with a nice view out the window. There is a box of
gloves just inside the door for visitors to put on.  He was quite weak, compared
to the last time I saw him, and lying on his side. He also tired easily, yawning
widely while we talked.

I said how much it sucked that he was back in hospital. He said he was "fed-up"
with the whole business. How his greatest regret was the way his life has been
"broken up" by the accident. It's the first time I've heard him express any
complaint or frustration, but he was still utterly free of self-pity. Just
facing the facts, with his trademark capacity for detachment and seeing the big
picture.

He talked about the new pages he wants to add to his autobiography: "New Times,
New People" , about the remarkable friends who have come into his life in the
last few years. And how moved he's been by the stream of people coming to see
him.

I encouraged him to drink, as we've been asked to do, and he let me give him
some apple juice, which he sipped through a straw while I held the cup. I met
his case manager, Joanne, who seemed very pleasant and competent. 15 minutes
into the visit, he perked up and asked me to raise his bed to a semi-sitting
position.

Phyllis came by briefly, with Bill's spectacles, fitted with new lenses to
correct the double vision. We tested them on the article Joe left for him, and
he was able to read without any problems.

After 45 minutes, they came to take him to physical therapy. He was so much more
alert and energetic than he'd been when I arrived. It's so clear that he draws
energy from visitors, and the stimulation of conversation and exchange.

I was told he will be there for at least 4 more days.
