I do think that there should be an explicit button (Stop, most likely) that actually wholly cancels when it leaves, but it seems to me that "Left" should be treated as wholly navigation, not affecting the state of the setting beyond where it's visibly set on the screen, so in the case of the checkmark following the cursor (live updating settings) then you get wherever the cursor was, in other settings you get wherever you left the checkmark at.

It was pointed out on the forums that only few settings (i.e., selected
sound and LCD settings) need this dynamic behaviour;
For these I would suggest the tick mark to move with the cursor,
maintainging the invariant "LEFT leaves the setting and the last marked
value is set".
