I can see how the option of ( and ) makes some things easier, but I would
be interested to hear what necessitates the skin-breaking /requirement/

better integration with the upcoming theme editor through a better
parser. Also means better debugging!
Also, the recent new tags expose the limitations of the old syntax
(well, there was no fixed syntax) and therefore create huge inconstency.
Better readability is also a concern.
