<http://lyrikline.wordpress.com/2009/10/26/gruswort-von-bundesprasident-horst-kohler-anlasslich-der-festveranstaltung-%e2%80%9e10-jahre-internetplattform-%e2%80%9alyrikline-org%e2%80%99%e2%80%9c-am-26-oktober-2009/>

Newsletter lyrikline.org <http://www.lyrikline.org/>  October/November

"Why are poems so important for so many people, and why especially spoken
poems? Because poems are the densest, most exacting and sophisticated and most
subjective way of shaping language, of putting the world into words, of giving
expression to existence. Poems are small nests of resistance against the mighty
flood of junk language that comes at us day-by-day from all the media." This is
part of the speech given by German President Horst Köhler at the opening of the
week of events to celebrate 10 years of lyrikline.org. You can read the
complete text of the speech (in German) on the lyrikline.org blog
<http://lyrikline.wordpress.com/2009/10/26/opening-address-by-federal-president-horst-kohler-at-an-event-to-celebrate-10-years-of-the-%e2%80%98lyrikline-org%e2%80%99-internet-platform-on-26-october-2009-in-the-kulturbrauerei-berlin/>
 .

And the celebrations for the anniversary are continuing in many events around
Berlin until 31 October. Anyone who can't get to Berlin can still follow the
finale of the week of events on a live stream on the Internet from 8 pm CET and
take part in a chat that's being specially set up. Berlin poet Steffen Popp
will be commenting live on the event on Twitter. You can find the programme for
the week of events on lyrikline.org

To coincide with this, Afrikaans is boosting the number of languages on
lyrikline.org to 50, as it joins the fold with the poems of Antjie Krog (South
Africa), while poems by Hermann Hesse (Germany/Switzerland) can now be heard in
the 'Aural Heritage' edition as can works by Nadia Budde (Germany) in the
'Poetry for Children' edition.
