VORTRAGSREIHE TERRITORIEN DES IN/HUMANEN 17. Juni–29. Juli 2010 Die Vortragsreihe, bei der jeweils ein Künstler der Ausstellung "Territorien des In/Humanen" im Württembergischen Kunstverein auf einen Gastreferenten trifft, greift verschiedene Aspekte der Thematik auf und vertieft sie in Präsentationen und Gesprächen. Sie wird organisiert vom Programm "art, science & business" der Akademie Schloss Solitude. Beginn ist jeweils donnerstags um 19 Uhr. Die Ausstellung ist an diesen Tagen während der Veranstaltung geöffnet. Die ersten drei Abende finden in englischer Sprache statt, die letzten beiden Abende in deutscher Sprache. JUNI 2010, 19 UHR MATILDE CASSANI (Architektin/Künstlerin, Mailand): Sacred Interiors in Profane Buildings + Spiritual Devices Matilde Cassani hat für ihr Projekt "Spiritual Devices" eine umfangreiche Untersuchung zu den zentralen Anforderungen an Raum, Mobiliar und andere Objekte für die Gebetsrituale von vier Weltreligionen durchgeführt. Dabei hat sie sich insbesondere an den provisorischen, teils inoffiziellen Gebetsräumen religiöser Minderheiten in europäischen Städten orientiert, um den Fragen nachzugehen, welchen Einfluss religiöse Pluralität auf zeitgenössische Städte ausübt und an welchen neuen urbanen Orten sie sich manifestieren kann. MICHAEL GUGGENHEIM (Soziologe, London/Zürich): (In-)Human Laws in (In-)Human Territories. Zoning Laws, Assisted Suicide, and Minarets In seiner soziologischen Studie erörtert Michael Guggenheim, wie religiöse Praktiken zu Räumen und Gebäuden in Beziehung stehen und was passiert, wenn Bauvorschriften dafür genutzt werden, um verschiedene Praktiken zu integrieren, auszuschließen oder zu verändern. In der Schweiz wurde versucht, die Praxis der Sterbehilfe sowie die Errichtung von Minaretten per Baugesetzgebung zu unterbinden. Das Recht des Staates, sein Territorium zu definieren und zu regeln, wie Menschen bauen dürfen, steht in Konflikt mit dem Wunsch meist ausländischer Mitbürger nach Selbstbestimmung und Glaubensfreiheit. --- DONNERSTAG, 8. JULI 2010, 19 UHR NOMEDA UND GEDIMINAS URBONAS (Künstler, Vilnius/Cambridge): Druzba Die Multimedia-Installation "Druzba" (zu Deutsch „Freundschaft“) von Nomeda und Gediminas Urbonas bezieht sich auf die gleichnamige Erdöl-Pipeline, die vom Ural bis Ostdeutschland reicht, und ihre politischen Verschränkungen. Die mittlerweile privatisierte Pipeline versorgte den gesamten damaligen „Ostblock“ und war ein Symbol der Verbundenheit unter den sozialistischen Staaten sowie ihrer Unabhängigkeit gegenüber den westlichen Märkten. MICHEL VERLAINE (Wirtschaftswissenschaftler, Nancy): Rationality and Finance In seinem Vortrag analysiert Michel Verlaine die hinter kapitalistischen Finanzmodellen der westlichen Märkte stehenden rationellen Annahmen und beschreibt, wie der feste Glaube an objektives Wissen bei Entscheidungsträgern vermutlich die aktuelle Finanzkrise herbeigeführt hat. Die Rolle des Subjekts in Entscheidungsprozessen, die im Finanzwesen oftmals von ungewissen Komponenten bestimmt sind, ist in der Finanztheorie eine bekannte Größe – und zugleich bleibt das Subjekt das unbekannte Wesen. --- DONNERSTAG, 15. JULI 2010, 19 UHR LUKAS EINSELE (Künstler, Darmstadt): The Many Moments of an M85—Zenon’s Arrow Retraced Lukas Einsele rekonstruiert in seinem Projekt die Flugbahn der Streumunition M85 vom Ort ihres Aufschlags zurück zu den Wurzeln ihrer Entstehung. Opfer der M85 und andere unmittelbar Betroffene, Minenräumer, Ärzte, Militärs, Politiker, Händler, Produzenten, Ingenieure ... – welche Menschen, Institutionen, Unternehmen, Parteien etc. sind in die verschiedenen Stationen der Flugbahn involviert, wie ist ihre Beziehung zur M85 und damit zueinander? RITTA BADDOURA (Schriftstellerin/Geisteswissenschaftlerin, Beirut/Montpellier): Hitch-Hiking on an M85 Route—A Road Trip Attempt in 5 Movements and a Finale Die Texte ihres Blogs „Ritta amidst the bombs“, den Ritta Baddoura – gefangen in ihrer Wohnung in Beirut – im Sommer 2006 begann, erreichten eine weltweite Leserschaft. In ihrer Lecture-Performance verhandelt sie die Explosion der M85 als persönliches Schicksal und politisches Ereignis und dringt in die unendliche Anzahl an Schichten von Fiktion und Realität vor. In Anlehnung an Lukas Einseles Arbeit nähert sich Ritta Baddoura dem Zersplitterungsmechanismus der M85 anhand von Fragen der Erinnerung und Robotik sowie aus künstlerischer Perspektive. Das Pfeil-Paradoxon des Zenon wird somit essentiell für die Veranschaulichung eines weitverzweigten M85-Stammbaums. --- DONNERSTAG, 22. JULI 2010, 19 UHR CHRISTINE MEISNER (Künstlerin, Berlin): The Present—“…, ‘Can you turn back?’” Das dreiteilige Projekt "The Present" setzt sich in Zeichnungen, Videos und einer Erzählung zunächst mit der Erinnerung an die koloniale Besetzung im Kongo auseinander. Im Zentrum stehen verschiedene Perspektiven, die zumeist mit einer Person und ihrer spezifischen Erinnerung verbunden sind und die Diskrepanz zwischen institutionalisierter und individueller Aufarbeitung von Geschichte und der Bedeutung von historischen Orten darstellen. In dem Vortrag wird Christine Meisner von ihrer Arbeit berichten und einzelne Passagen aus ihrer Video-Erzählung „…, ‚Can you turn back?‘“ vorstellen. RICARDO TAMAYO (Psychologe, Barranquilla/Berlin): Erinnerung: Das Labyrinth der Identität Die Schaffung von Identität ist eng mit der Funktion des Gedächtnisses verbunden: Die kohärente Darstellung des Selbst ist angewiesen auf die kontinuierliche Erinnerung unserer vorherigen Handlungen sowie auf die konstante Rekonstruktion unserer Vorstellungen. Gemäß aktueller Theorien kognitiver Neurowissenschaften verfügen Menschen zumindest über zwei Gedächtnistypen: die explizite und die implizite Form. Ricardo Tamayo wird die Konsequenzen dieser Sichtweise für die Bildung einer persönlichen und kulturellen Identität darstellen und mit klassischen Texten von Octavio Paz und Aristoteles in Verbindung setzen. --- DONNERSTAG, 29. JULI 2010, 19 UHR BJÖRN FRANKE (Künstler, London): Von menschlichen zu posthumanen Zukunftsszenarien Technologische Erfindungen in den Bereichen der künstlichen Intelligenz, der Mensch-Maschine-Schnittstellen und Implantattechnologie lösen zunehmend die Grenze zwischen menschlich und nicht-menschlich auf. Diese Entwicklung, der sich Björn Franke in seiner Studie widmet, stellt moralische und ethische Konzepte der menschlichen Identität vor neue Herausforderungen und vermag möglicherweise, das Menschliche nach und nach in ein so genanntes Posthumanes zu transformieren. FRIEDER NAKE (Informatiker, Bremen): Semiotisches Tier. Semiotische Maschine – Die Maschinisierung der Arbeit des Kopfes: Ein Fest des inhuman Humanen Der Mathematiker Felix Hausdorff charakterisierte den Menschen als semiotisches Tier. Die Informatiker bildeten das semiotische Tier bald danach auf einer Maschine ab, dem Computer – so hat sich ein Raum aufgetan zwischen semiotischem Tier und semiotischer Maschine. Ein Entrinnen aus dieser Beziehung, und das sei das Inhumane postuliert Frieder Nake, gibt es nicht mehr. Die Menschen sind aber nicht das, was sie meinen, sie werden es stets erst ... --- ENGLISH VERSION LECTURE SERIES TERRITORIES OF THE IN/HUMAN June 17–July 29, 2010 On each evening in this lecture series, an artist in the exhibition "Territories of the In/Human" (Württembergischer Kunstverein) will be in conversation with a guest speaker. In presentations and discussions, both will pick up and elaborate on different aspects of the topic. The lecture series is organized by the "art, science & business" program of Akademie Schloss Solitude. We will begin each Thursday at 7 pm. On these days, the exhibition is open during the event. The artist’s orientation here was particularly geared toward the provisional, sometimes unofficial, prayer rooms of religious minorities in European cities, to pursue the questions: what is the impact of religious pluralism on contemporary cities and what are the new places in which religious pluralism manifests itself? MICHAEL GUGGENHEIM (sociologist, London/Zurich): (In-)Human Laws in (In-)Human Territories. Zoning Laws, Assisted Suicide, and Minarets In his sociological survey, Michael Guggenheim explores the relation of religious practices to spaces and buildings, and what happens if the zoning law is used to include, exclude, and change different practices. With the help of zoning laws, the state of Switzerland tried to ban assisted suicide and minarets. The right of a state to define its territory and to regulate how people are allowed to build is mostly in conflict with foreign citizens and their desire for self-determination and the freedom of their beliefs. --- THURSDAY, JULY 8, 2010, 7 PM NOMEDA AND GEDIMINAS URBONAS (artists, Vilnius/Cambridge): Druzba The multimedia installation "Druzba" (meaning “friendship” in English) by Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas thematically takes up the homonymous oil pipeline stretching from the Urals into Eastern Germany and its resulting political entanglements. The currently privatized pipeline previously served the entire “Eastern Bloc” in the past and was a symbol, both of solidarity among the socialist states and of their independence vis-à-vis Western markets. MICHEL VERLAINE (economist, Nancy): Rationality and Finance In his lecture, Michel Verlaine analyzes the rational assumptions behind capitalist finance models of Western markets and describes how the strong belief in the objective knowledge of the decision maker presumably caused the current financial crisis. The role of the subject in decision processes, often being determined by uncertain elements in the financial system, is a known parameter in finance. At the same time, the subject remains the unknown entity. --- THURSDAY, JULY 15, 2010, 7 PM LUKAS EINSELE (artist, Darmstadt): The Many Moments of an M85—Zenon’s Arrow Retraced In his project, Lukas Einsele pursues the trajectory of M85 cluster bombs in reverse sequence: from the site of impact back to the roots of their inception. Victims of M85 and other person concerned like mine sweepers, physicians, military, politicians, dealer, producer, engineers …—which individuals, institutions, companies, parties, etc. are involved in the different parts of the trajectory and what is their relation to M85 and to each other? RITTA BADDOURA (writer/scholar, Beirut/Montpellier): Hitch-Hiking on an M85 Route—A Road Trip Attempt in 5 Movements and a Finale Stuck in her Beirut apartment in Summer 2006, Ritta Baddoura started the blog “Ritta amidst the bombs”. Her posted texts thus aroused an intense interest among readers worldwide. In her lecture performance, Ritta Baddoura addresses the M85 explosion as an event affecting both the intimate and the political, while invading the infinite layers of fiction and reality. In an attempt to explore Lukas Einsele’s work, she considers the M85 fragmentation mechanism through the questions of memory, robotics, and art. Zenon’s arrow’s paradox then becomes an essential for depicting a comprehensive M85 family tree. --- THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2010, 7 PM CHRISTINE MEISNER (artist, Berlin): The Present—“…, ‘Can you turn back?’” Through drawings, videos, and a narrative, the threepart project "The Present" firstly explores the reminiscence of the colonial occupation in the Congo. The focus is on different perspectives, in most cases linked to an individual and his/her specific memory, that depict, next to the meaning of historical places, the discrepancy between institutional and individual reappraisals of the past. In her lecture, Christine Meisner will report on her work and present several sections of the video “…, ‘Can you turn back?’” RICARDO TAMAYO (psychologist, Barranquilla/Berlin): Memory: The Labyrinth of Identity Identity is intimately related to memory: a coherent depiction of our self relies on the psychological continuity provided by the recollection of our previous actions and the constant reconstruction of our beliefs. According to current theories in cognitive neuroscience, human beings have at least two different forms of memory, an explicit and an implicit form. Ricardo Tamayo will talk about the consequences of this multi-system view in the formation of personal and cultural identity and link it to classic texts by Octavio Paz and Aristotle. --- THURSDAY, JULY 29, 2010, 7 PM BJÖRN FRANKE (artist, London): From Human Futures to Post-Human Futures Technological developments in the fields of artificial intelligence, human/machine interfaces, and implant technology further blur the boundaries between the human and non-human. These changes, Björn Franke addresses in his study, challenge moral and ethical concepts of human identity and may gradually transform the human into what might be called the post-human. FRIEDER NAKE (computer scientist, Bremen): Semiotic Animal. Semiotic Machine—The Mechanization of the Head’s Work: a Feast of the Inhuman Human The mathematician Felix Hausdorff characterizes the human being as a semiotic animal. Soon after, information scientists mapped the semiotic animal on a machine, the computer—thus a space developed around the semiotic animal and the semiotic machine. According to Frieder Nake, an escape out of this relation is no longer possible—and this is the inhuman. But human beings are not what they seem to be: they are the ever-becoming …
