Objects presented by Gosia Golin'ska are made of accidentally found,
rummaged from the dark corners, bought for pennies old clothes or just
scraps. "One's garbage is someone else's treasure" says the old proverb
and unwanted clothes, unused suits, faded blouses smelling of old
perfume are that treasure for Golin'ska. Once precious, favourite,
perhaps used only for special events, today ripped, out of fashion,
missing round or bony shapes of past owners that used to fill them, with
no chance of attending a ball.
Our intimacy and identity are hidden under the mask of clothing. Clothes
are nothing else but costumes functioning as a social skin, used by an
individual to communicate with the world. They are an indicator, a
measure of sexual and ethnic identity. They do not belong to a private
domain, but rather form a surface, a dress up for the surrounding world,
the cover communicating our self-image to others.
Golin'ska's creation is almost alchemical: from a piece of mouldy cloth
the artist draws out a reflection of somebody's memories, somebody's
personality. The worn out, faint mask of the clothing becomes an object
-- a vehicle for a presence, for a story. An artefact is like an
emigrant travelling through time and space -- becoming a medium, a
colourful storage of images of cultures and traditions. It carries them
wherever it goes, presents them from whatever wall it is being exposed on.
