Wenn wir auf die Anfänge der Aufzeichnungstechnologie Magnetband
zurückblicken, breitet sich vor uns eine gut vierzigjährige technische
Evolution aus. Durchgehend wird seitdem das Magnetband als
Speichermedium benutzt, das bis ins heutige digitale Zeitalter Bestand
hat. In Archiven sowie Sammlungen halten Videobänder die Erinnerung an
vergangene Momente der Zeitgeschichte wach und transportieren
künstlerische Inhalte in die Gegenwart.
Die Referenten des Workshops werden durch die Entwicklung und die Zeit
des analogen Videos führen und Informationen zu technischen
Eigenschaften und Besonderheiten vermitteln, die ein erweitertes
Verständnis für den Umgang mit den verschiedenen analogen
Speicherformaten -- von der offenen Spule bis zu den Kassettenformaten
-- eröffnen. Da die große Vielfalt bei den analogen Videoformaten eines
der größten Hindernisse bei der Identifizierung im Archiv oder im
Sammlungsdepot darstellt, werden die Workshop-Teilnehmer anhand von
Originalmaterial und -geräten mit den verschiedenen Speicherformaten
sowie den dazugehörigen Aufnahme- und Abspielgeräten bekannt gemacht.
Zudem erhalten sie eine kurze Einführung in die Technik der
zeitgenössischen Präsentationsgeräte für analoges Video.
Dieser Workshop richtet sich an alle Berufsgruppen, die für Archive und
Sammlungen mit analogen Videoformaten verantwortlich sind und Sicherheit
in der Bestimmung und Präsentation dieser Medien gewinnen wollen. Der
Workshop schließt an den vorherigen /Digitale Videoformate und ihre
Präsentationsmedien/ (19. Juli 2012) an, kann aber auch ohne diese
Vorkenntnisse besucht werden.

*DIE REFERENTEN*
Fenna Yola Tykwer
Fenna Yola Tykwer (*1979) ist seit April 2012 als
Diplom-Konservatorin/-Restauratorin (FH) am Historischen Archiv der
Stadt Köln angestellt. Sie arbeitete von 2006 bis 2010 für das ZKM in
Karlsruhe mit dem Tätigkeitsschwerpunkt auf der konservatorischen und
restauratorischen Ausstellungsbetreuung (insbesondere zeitgenössische
Installationskunst, Medienkunst, Videokunst, Fotographie und Grafik).
Von 2010 bis 2011 war sie an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden
Künste Stuttgart als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Studiengang
"Konservierung Neuer Medien und Digitaler Information" (Schwerpunkt
Video) angestellt. In der Zeit von Oktober bis Dezember 2011 war sie am
imai - inter media art institute als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im
Bereich Konservierung und Restaurierung tätig. Fenna Yola Tykwer
promoviert an der Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart zum Thema
"Medienkunsterhaltung im Wandel der Zeit - Erhaltung, Darstellung und
Vermittlung".
Friedrich Sambs
Friedrich Sambs (*1959) ist seit 2004 im Bereich der Erhaltung
antiquierter Videotechnik selbständig tätig u.a. mit den Schwerpunkten
Bandreinigung, Entwicklung von Videoband-Reinigungsmaschinen,
Digitalisierung von antiquierten Videoformaten, Wartung, Instandsetzung
und Modifikation von Videogeräten nahezu aller Formate, Konservierung
und Restaurierung von Röhrenfernsehern. Seit mehreren Jahren arbeitet er
als freier Mitarbeiter für das "Labor für antiquierte Videosysteme" und
das Medienmuseum des ZKM in Karlsruhe.

The start of recording technology with magnetic tape was followed by a
period of technical evolution spanning at least forty years. Since then
magnetic tape has continued to be used to store data, even though today
we live in the digital age. Video tapes in archives and collections keep
the memory of historical events fresh and transport artistic contents
into the present.
The speakers at the workshop will guide us through the development and
time of analogue video and communicate information about the technical
features and specialities which will allow a better understanding of how
to handle the various analogue storage formats -- from the open reel to
the cassette. As the wide range of analogue video formats is one of the
greatest barriers to the process of identification in the archive or
collection, the workshop participants will get to know the different
storage formats and respective recording and playback devices with a
demonstration of original material and machines. In addition,
participants will be given a short introduction to the technology of
contemporary presentation devices for analogue video.
This workshop is suitable for professionals responsible for the archives
and collections of analogue video formats who wish to gain more
confidence in the determination and presentation of these media. The
workshop builds on the previous /Digital video formats and their
presentation media/ (19th July, 2012), but can be attended without this
previous knowledge.

Fenna Yola Tykwer
Fenna Yola Tykwer (*1979) has been employed since April 2012 as a
qualified curator and restorer (Diplom-Konservatorin/-Restauratorin
(FH)) at the historic archive of the city of Cologne. From 2006 to 2010
she worked for the ZKM in Karlsruhe where her main area of activities
was the management of exhibitions in terms of conservation and
restoration (in particular contemporary installation art, media art,
video art, photography and graphics). Then, from 2010 to 2011 she was
employed at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design as a research
assistant in the course of studies "Conservation of new media and
digital information" (focus on video). From October to December 2011 she
worked at imai - inter media art institute as a research assistant in
the area of conservation and restoration. Fenna Yola Tykwer is doing her
doctorate at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design on the theme
of "Media art preservation over the course of time - preservation,
presentation and communication".
Friedrich Sambs
Friedrich Sambs (*1959) has, since 2004, worked as a self-employed
person in the area of the preservation of antiquated video technology
with a focus on the areas of tape cleaning, development of video tape
cleaning machines, digitalisation of antiquated video formats, the
maintenance, repair and modification of video devices of nearly all
formats, and the conservation and restoration of cathode tube
televisions. For a number of years he has worked as a freelancer for the
"Laboratory of antiquated video systems" and the media museum of the ZKM
in Karlsruhe.
