One World Berlin Human Film Festival 2014

Opening Film

1971
USA 2014
Dir: Johanna Hamilton

GERMAN PREMIERE, DIRECTOR ATTENDING

Johanna Hamilton's documentary 1971 recounts the story of anti-Vietnam War activists who uncovered and leaked the FBI's widespread - and unconstitutional - surveillance programs by stealing files from the FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania. COINTELPRO, the FBI's acronym for these measures, targeted the Black Panthers, anti war protestors and other groups and individuals who ran afoul of the conservative U.S. government. Concerned citizens fought back, by stealing all the files from the Media, Pennsylvania local FBI office and making them available to the press. The Media break-in was a game changer, paving the way for Watergate, Wikileaks and Edward Snowden.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Johanna Hamilton, Ann Wertheimer (Chair American Voices Abroad Berlin), Wolfgang Kaleck (European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, Edward Snowden's German attorney) and Annie Machon (author, intelligence agency expert). Moderator: Nadja Vancauwenberghe, editor-in-chief Exberliner <https://www.facebook.com/EXBERLINER>)
