September - 11. Oktober 2015 Das internationale wissenschaftliche Filmprojekt Encyclopaedia Cinematographica wurde in den fünfziger Jahren am Institut für wissenschaftlichen Film in Göttingen (IWF) u.a. von Gotthard Wolf und von dem Verhaltensforscher Konrad Lorenz initiiert und umfasst mehrere tausend, meist zweiminütige Filme, die ursprünglich, angeordnet in einer Art Matrix, die gesamte bewegte Welt erfassen sollten. Die belebte Welt wird nach Arten und Gattungen und deren spezifischem Bewegungsspektrum gegliedert und systematisch erfasst. Film wird hier auf seine Essenz reduziert: Die Darstellung von Bewegung. Christoph Keller spitzt in seiner Arbeit den Gedanken der Encyclopaedia Cinematographica zu. Er bearbeitet eine Auswahl von filmischen ,Einträgen‘ der EC, isoliert daraus die kleinste mögliche Bewegungseinheit und reiht die so entstehenden Bewegungszyklen zu 40 Loops aneinander. Die sich endlos fortbewegenden Tiere werden im Aquarium als 2-Kanal Videoinstallation gezeigt. „Es handelt sich bei den Filmen der Encyclopaedia Cinematographica um die denkbar reinste Form des wissenschaftlichen Dokumentarfilms. Ohne jeden Kommentar, ohne Musik und dramatisierende Schnitte werden ,nur‘ die Bewegungsformen und Abläufe der verschiedensten Tierarten dokumentiert. Die Filme sollten ein Inventar aller auf der Erde existierenden Bewegungsformen von Tieren erstellen. Ihre Endlichkeit ist die Wirklichkeit der tatsächlichen Artenvielfalt.“ – Cord Riechelmann In seinen häufig wie Versuchsanordnungen anmutenden Installationen nutzt Christoph Keller die diskursiven Möglichkeiten der Kunst, um sich mit Phänomenen der Wissenschaft und ihren Utopien zu beschäftigen. Er hat seine Studien 1999 an der Kunsthochschule für Medien in Köln als Postgraduierter abgeschlossen, davor studierte er u.a. Mathematik und Physik in Berlin und Santiago de Chile. Oktober 2015 The international scientific film project Encyclopaedia Cinematographica has been founded in the 1950s by the Institute for Scientific Film (IWF), Göttingen/Germany, instigated a. o. by the ethnologist Konrad Lorenz. The past exhibitions comprises several thousand films, mostly of 2 minutes duration and organised in a kind of matrix, which were supposed to document the entire moving world. The moving world has been subdivided in species and their specific spectrum of movements and systematically recorded. Film has been reduced to its very essence: the depiction of movement. Christoph Keller pushes the idea of the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica further. He selected 40 entries and isolated their smallest possible sequence of movement, creating new cycles of movements arranged in 40 loops. The videos of the endlessly moving animals are presented in the Aquarium in a form of a 2 channel video installation. “The films of the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica are the purest form of scientific documentary film imaginable. They document ‘only’ the forms and series of motions of a wide variety of animals without any commentary, music or dramatic cuts. The films were intended to be an inventory of all the forms of animal motion existing on earth. Their limitation is the reality of the actual variety of species.” – Cord Riechelmann In his installations frequently resembling experimental configurations, German artist Christoph Keller uses the discursive possibilities of art to investigate the themes of science and its utopias. He first studied mathematics, physics and hydrology, before continuing his studies at the art academy in Berlin and in Cologne.
