Balaklava-Odyssey. Media Art and Performance Festival. Submarine Hangar. Balaklava (Crimea, Ukraine), 04.-06. August 2006 http://www.balaklava-odyssey.com Im August 2006 findet erstmalig das Medienkunst- und Performancefestival Balaklava-Odyssey in dem über 2500 Jahre alten europäischen Kulturort Balaklawa (Krim, Ukraine) statt. Künstler aus acht Ländern - Ukraine, Russland, Rumänien, Moldawien, Polen, Schweiz, Österreich und Deutschland sind zu dem Pilotprojekt eingeladen. Sie haben sich mit der Geschichte des Ortes auseinander gesetzt und präsentieren Werke aus den Sparten Video, Animation, Multi-Media, Performance, Tanz und experimentelle Musik. Der Ort, den schon Homer in der Odyssee erwähnt, war in der Antike Schauplatz des Tantalidenmythos. Hier ist auch das Theaterstück Iphigenie auf Tauris (Euripides, Goethe) angesiedelt. 1953 ließ Chruschtschow im Tauris-Berg einen U-Boot-Hangar anlegen, der zugleich als Lager für Nuklearwaffen diente. Balaklawa war bis 1995 eine geschlossene Militärstadt. Balaklava-Odyssey versucht nun eine kulturelle Wiederbelebung des Ortes. Das Festival findet in dem U-Boot-Hangar, der heute als Museum betrieben wird, statt. The media art and performance festival Balaklava-Odyssey is taking place for the first time in August 2006. Balaklava, the site of the event, is situated in Crimea (Ukraine) and has been a European cultural site for over 2500 years. Artists from eight countries - Ukraine, Russia, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria and Germany - are invited to this pilot project. They will stage art works in the areas of video, animation, multi-media, performance, experimental music and dance that deal with the multitude of historical references in Balaklava. This site, already mentioned by Homer in his Odyssey, is also the location of the myth of Tantalids and the famous play Iphigenia in Tauris (by Euripides, Goethe). On Khrushchev`s orders, in 1953 a submarine hangar was built inside the mountain of Tauris, that also served as a storage facility for nuclear weapons. Until 1995, Balaklava was hermetically sealed off. The festival is taking place in the submarine hangar that today is used as a museum. It is meant to be the base for future cooperation in Balaklava.
