CHICAGO (USA) - THREE WALLS GALLERY VIDEOINSTALLATION "RIVERINE ZONES CONNECTED" sponsort by ifa - Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e.V. April 13-19th opening night April 13, 7-9PM Three Walls Gallery and Residency, 119 North Peoria St. Chicago http://three-walls.org/ Groupexhibition: "Place in a Flat World" LiveBox at ThreeWalls: "Place in a Flat World", part two of Three Walls' placing (moving explorations in search of bearings), probes the trend of homogeneity and globalization. Several of the artists will be present at the reception, coming from Berlin, San Francisco and Regina Canada. Philipp Geist will be arriving in early April to add the Chicago River to his project Riverine Zones Connected. Geist has documented, from underwater to water surface, familiar heavily populated waterways and ports of Europe. LiveBox is also excited about the participation of Jiang Zhi, an internationally recognized photographer, documentary and feature filmmaker and novelist. Place n. area, location, locus, point, position, site, situation, spot, station, venue, whereabouts, city, district, hamlet, locale, locality, neighborhood, quarter, region, town, village,... source: Collins Thesaurus. We could add "web" to the above, just where are we when we're surfing the web? There is much hype about a world that is becoming flatter and more homogenized through globalization, yet the artists in this exhibition, find poetry, mystery, singularity and history in their immediate environs. Sonja Hinrichsen's focus is on immediate environments, investigating landscapes and cityscapes as well as industrial spaces. Hinrichensen grew up in heavy populated Northern Europe and has a fascination for the open spaces of the United Sates. Rachelle Viader Knowles explores her neighbor Berine's relationship to living in Regina Canada while imagining he really lives in NY in "In My Mind I Live in NY". Philipp Geist's "Riverine Zones Connected", documents from underwater to water surface multiple estuaries and rivers in Europe (usually recognizable heavily populated water ways and ports). http://riverine.videogeist.de Brooke White's "Passing Through", is literally her displacement on journeys abroad. Places are not experienced, not really known, simply observed, merging into one long narrative. Ziang Zhi's "Fly Fly" takes us to an internal space, a small apartment. I the tiny cramped quarters a hand mimicking a swan gently soars through the interior seemingly longing to escape. "Inter-Place" probes a place within a virtual space. Video-streaming sites provide a personal screening room, open 24-7 no matter where you physically reside. An iPOD plays a collection of videos about locality, which have been downloaded from a variety of video streaming sites. ThreeWalls Presents: A video show in three parts. Artists featured in the show(s) include: art world etiquette: Alex Bag, Anetta Mona Chisa & Lucia Tkacova, Jakup Ferri, Nancy Holt & Robert Smithson, Kalup Linzy; place in a flat world: Sonja Hinrichsen, Rachelle Viader Knowles, Philipp Geist, Brooke White, Jiang Zhi, LiveBox: Inter-Place; pop moves: Tony Cokes, Sadie Benning, Slater Bradley, Siebren Versteeg. Bios Kat Parker and Katie Rashid worked together at Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago for three years before opening their own space called Duchess. Their aim with Duchess is to provide artists with a space in which to present new and often experimental work. Catherine Forster is the founder and director of LiveBox Gallery, a non-for-profit focused on video and new media art. Forster is also a multimedia artist; her work explores identity and the impact of pop culture on individuality. Ruba Katrib (formerly of ThreeWalls) is now a master's candidate at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College where she recently completed her thesis exhibition Temporarily Disconnected featuring the work of Ma'ayan Amir & Ruti Sela, Jannicke Låker, Erik van Lieshout, and Julika Rudelius. Kalup Linzy is a recognized video artist who works as writer, director, actor and editor to lampoon and satirize various forms of film & television such as Hollywood tearjerkers and soap operas using multi-layered characters and subplots that weave throughout the work. He deals with highly charged themes such as gender, sexuality, race, class, and popular culture. His takes on these issues are eloquently fused into his delightfully raunchy videos and performances Conversations Wit De Churen, Diva in Distress and All My Churen. Linzy will also be a participant in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Visiting Artist Program on March 28th at 6pm. The placing exhibition and ThreeWalls are not affiliated with VAP. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.)
