TUNED CITY - BETWEEN SOUND AND SPACE SPECULATION
Hello!
Here comes the last edition of the Tuned City newsletter before the
opening on 1 July at Pfefferberg, Berlin. 5 days
of talks, presentations, performances, workshops,
installations, discussions, walks on the topic of
sound and architecture at the most different
locations around Berlin. We are looking forward

"We experience spaces not only by seeing but also
by listening. We navigate a room in the dark, and
'hear' the emptiness of a house without
furniture. Our
experience of music in a concert hall depends on
whether we sit in the front row or under the
balcony. The unique acoustics of religious spaces
acquire symbolic meaning. It is possible to learn
to see with your ears, but even without training,
we can all hear spatial geometry such as an open
door or low ceiling." Barry Blesser, who belongs
to the pioneers of the digital audio revolution,
will introduce the concepts and vocabulary of
aural architecture with his lecture on acoustic
spatial perception.
The Spanish musician and architect Antón
García-Abril designs and constructs buildings for
music. His minimal concert hall architectures in
Medina el Campo or Santiago del Compostela are
planned for concerts of new and experimental
music and vary the topic of the "white cube" as
an ideal space with the most flexibility for the
changes and the development of performance
practice.
Both lectures approach the topic of architecture
and sound from different perspectives, they
question our perceptive habits and our way of
dealing with space.
The Dutch performance group BMB con. will as
usually not give away what they are planning to
do, perhaps they don't even know themselves. One
thing is certain,
they are going to change the performance space
thoroughly. BMB con. work with sound, image,
space and whatever they can lay their hands on.
So far they have performed in every kind of
space, in museums, concert halls, forests, ships
or water tanks - but never in a zoo.
With their performance Infrasound, the Americans
Randy Yau and Scott Arford explore the
possibility to experience space both acoustically
and physically. The play with the resonance of
material, with acoustic phenomena, sound
cancellation and sound shadows and create thereby
an impressive physical sound experience.

Over five days, the symposium will approach the topic from five different
theoretical and spatial perspectives. The chosen venues - spaces built for
the production or reception of sound, acoustically flawed or impossible spaces,
public and semi-public urban spaces, finished and planned spaces, wasteland or
cultivated spaces, indoor and outdoor locations - each serve to illustrate the
topics of that day, and offer a mixture of lectures, artistic presentation,
performances and examples of working architectural practice.

You are welcome to make reservations for tickets. For the opening
(01.07./ 8 pm / Pfefferberg) and building with
sound (02.07./ 3 pm / Brunnenstrasse 9) only a
few tickets are left. Some of the venues offer
only a limited capacity we advise to make
reservations as soon as possible to avoid
disappointment.

Sounds belong to the City. They determine spaces and identities. For
years, artists have been using city noises as a
material to stage or to question urban space -
new territory, however, for most architects and
planners within the routines of functional
planning procedures. Tuned City - Between Sound
and Space Speculation searches for a new
evaluation of architectural spaces
from the perspective of acoustics. This volume
presents various positions of architects, artists
and theorists to expand the architectural
discourse with the
dimension of listening.

"Wir erleben Raeume nicht nur durch das Sehen,
sondern genauso durch das Hoeren. Wir navigieren
sicher durch einen Raum im Dunkeln und hoeren die
Leere
eines unmoeblierten Hauses. Ein musikalisches
Erlebnis in einem Konzerthaus ist davon bestimmt,
ob wir in der ersten Reihe oder unterm ersten
Rang sitzen. Der einzigartigen Akustik sakraler
Raeume wohnt eine symbolische Bedeutung inne. Es
ist moeglich, mit den Ohren sehen zu lernen, aber
selbst ohne Uebung koennen wir raeumliche
Gegebenheiten wie eine offene Tuer oder eine
niedrige Decke akustisch erfassen." Barry
Blesser, der zu den Pionieren der digitalen
Audiorevolution gehoert, wird in seinen Vortrag
zur akustischen Raumwahrnehmung in die Konzepte
und das Vokabular auraler Architektur einfuehren.
Der spanische Musiker und Architekt Antón
García-Abril entwirft und baut Gehaeuse fuer
Musik. Seine minimalistischen
Konzertsaal-Architekturen in Medina el Campo oder
Santiago del Compostela sind fuer Konzerte Neuer
und Experimenteller Musik gedacht und variieren
das Thema des "white cube" als idealen Raum mit
groesster Flexibilitaet fuer Veraenderung und
Entwicklung der Auffuehrungspraxis.
Beide Vortraege naehern sich dem Thema
Architektur und Klang aus verschiedenen
Richtungen, hinterfragen unsere
Wahrnehmungsgewohnheiten und das
Selbstverstaendnis im Umgang mit Raum.
Die hollaendische Performancegruppe BMB con. wird
sich wie ueblich nicht anmerken lassen, was sie
vorhaben, vielleicht wissen sie es selbst auch
nicht. Sicher ist nur, dass sie den
Performanceort gruendlich veraendern werden. BMB
con. arbeitet mit Klang, Bild, Raum und was immer
sie in die Finger bekommen und haben bisher in
jeder Art Raum gespielt, in Museen,
Konzertsaelen, Waeldern, Schiffen oder
Wassertanks - nie aber in einem Zoo.
Die Amerikaner Randy Yau und Scott Arford
untersuchen mit ihrer Performance Infrasound die
Moeglichkeit, Raum sowohl akustisch als auch
physisch erfahrbar zu machen. Sie spielen mit
Resonanzeigenschaften von Materialien,
akustischen Phaenomenen, Klangausloeschungen und
Klangschatten und erzeugen damit ein
eindrucksvolles, koerperliches Raumerlebnis.

Das Symposium wird sich an den einzelnen Tagen aus fuenf verschiedenen
theoretischen und raeumlichen Perspektiven dem Thema naehern. Fuer die
Produktion und Rezeption von Klang gebaute oder akustisch fehlerhafte
und unmoegliche Raeume, oeffentlicher und halboeffentlicher Stadtraum,
fertige und in Planung befindliche Räume, brachliegende und bebaute
Raeume, Innen- und Aussenrauume - die gewaehlten Veranstaltungsorte
korrespondieren mit den jeweiligen Tagesthemen.
Das klassische Konferenzformat wird erweitert zu einer Mischung
aus akademischem Vortrag, kuenstlerischer Praesentation, Werkberichten,
Demonstrationen und Fuehrungen ueber den Ort.

Sounds in der Stadt sind allgegenwaertig. Sie
bestimmen Raeume, Situationen und Identitaeten.
Seit Jahrzehnten nutzen Kuenstler die Geraeusche
der Stadt als
Material, um den gebauten Raum zu inszenieren und
zu hinterfragen - fuer Planer und Architekten ist
das Entwerfen von und mit Sound hingegen Neuland.
Tuned City - Zwischen Klang- und Raumspekulation
fragt nach der Neubewertung architektonischer
Raeume aus der Perspektive des Akustischen. Der
vorliegende Band fasst Positionen von Kuenstlern,
Architekten und Wissenschaftlern zusammen und
bietet eine Grundlage, um den Architekturdiskurs
um die fluechtige Dimension des Hoerens zu
erweitern.
