Yet Another Media Conference 2009 - „Adopted/Adapted Images“

ausgerichtet vom internationalen Kurzfilmfestival EMERGEANDSEE, in
Kooperation mit der Universität Potsdam und der Fachhochschule Potsdam
„Schon wieder eine Medienkonferenz!“ So betitelt sich die
wissenschaftliche Konferenz, die im Rahmen des Kurzfilmfestivals
EMERGEANDSEE stattfindet. Das Thema der Konferenz beschäftigt sich
mit Adoption und/oder Adaption von kulturellen Bildern im Film. Im
Zeitalter der Globalisierung darf ein Diskurs über die An- und
Umdeutung dieser Bilder nicht fehlen. Zum zweiten Mal werden daher
auf der „Yet Another Media Conference“ am 08. Februar Sichtweisen
internationaler Wissenschaftler und Filmemacher im Collegium
Hungaricum Berlin ausgetauscht.
Auf der „Yet Another Media Conference“ mit dem Titel „Adopted/Adapted
Images“ wollen die Vortragenden speziell darüber ins Gespräch kommen,
wie sich kulturelle Identität im Film verorten lässt, wie sie sich
entwickeln und in ein anderes übergehen kann. Dabei wird neben der
künstlerischen Geste der Adaption auch die Adoption von kulturell
geprägten Bildern diskutiert. Hinterfragt wird allerdings nicht die
Herkunft der Bilder, sondern ihre Veränderung durch das Wandern und
eine andere Verwendung. Fraglich ist dabei zum Beispiel, was uns
„fremde“ Bilder eines Films „verstehen“ lässt und was dieses
„Verstehen“ überhaupt beinhaltet. In der Diskussion tritt dabei die
künstlerische Geste der Adaption neben die Adoption.
Ramón Reichert (Kunstuniversität Linz) widmet sich den kulturellen
Identitäten und Gedächtnissen im Film in Zeiten der Globalisierung.
Der Geschichte einer britischen Novelle, die in Flandern spielt, aber
in Japan, nicht in England oder Belgien Karriere machte, geht An van.
Dienderen (Royal Academy of Fine Arts Ghent) auf den Grund. Angela
Melitopoulos hingegen betrachtet die filmische Repräsentation von
Zeit mit der Videoprojekte versuchen, der Wahrnehmung von
Flüchtlingen nahe zu kommen. Anhand eines animierten Videos der BBC,
das während der Olympischen Spielen in Peking in verschiedenen Medien
verbreitet wurde, untersucht Wang Zhe (City University of Hong Kong)
die transnationalen Relationen von Macht und Kommunikation. Nähere

Von 11 bis 17 Uhr widmen sich die Vortragenden aus Belgien, China,
Deutschland und Österreich diesem Thema. Durch Videomaterial
verdeutlichen sie ihre Thesen und zeigen Beispiele auf. Die
anschließende Diskussion bietet Raum für eine Auseinandersetzung mit
den vorgestellten Positionen. Die Konferenzsprache ist Englisch,
deutschsprachige Beiträge werden durch ein englisches Handout
ergänzt. Der Eintritt ist frei.
Das internationale Kurzfilmfestival EMERGEANDSEE findet vom 03. bis
08. Februar 2009 statt. In diesem Jahr beschäftigen sich auch die
Filme des thematischen Wettbewerbs „EAST-WEST“ (am 03.02., ab 19:30
Uhr im Filmtheater am Friedrichshain) mit den unterschiedlichen
Sichtweisen auf dieses Begriffspaar, welches viele Bilder erzeugt und
bedient. Der studentische EMERGEANDSEE Wettbewerb präsentiert
unbändige Kurzfilme, die neue Einflüsse erkunden und ausloten (4.
Februar, ab 19:30 Uhr, FaF).
Die Veranstaltung ist eine Kooperation von EMERGEANDSEE, dem
Studiengang Europäische Medienwissenschaft (Universität Potsdam/
Fachhochschule Potsdam) und dem Collegium Hungaricum Berlin. Das
ungarische Kulturzentrum präsentiert im Rahmen von „Cinema Total
Second Edition“ vom 6. bis zum 13. Februar weitere Veranstaltungen,
Empfänge, Screenings, Workshops und Fachmeetings.

The Temporality of Escape
How is the perception of time during forced migration represented in
videoessays?
Image production is a vital mechanism of migration because movement
can be communicated through the image. New genres of narration
develop with migration in order to grasp space, stories of here/there
and processes of de- and re-territorialization. Testimony of forced
migrations has a
different understanding of continuity because the experience of time
is intensifying the logic of the detail. Two video projects will be
presented that translate the testimony of refugees into video
narratives visualizing the temporality of flight. Passing Drama is
based on recollections of survivors of deportations from Asia Minor
to Greece in 1923. Their story has been transmitted, retold, re-
memorised from one generation to the next. Timescapes/B-Zone is a
collective non-linear video editing project in South East Europe.

Nello and Patrasche, western samurais? Japanese imagination of “A dog
of Flanders”
A 19th century British novelist wrote A Dog of Flanders about a poor
boy Nello and his dog Patrasche. They die in each other’s arms in
front of a Rubens’ painting in the Antwerp cathedral. This novel
inspired numerous films and TV series in Japan and the States. The
most influential of them being the Japanese animated series of 1975:
each episode was watched by over 25 million. By contrast, nobody in
Flanders knows the novel or the impact of the story. Didier Volckaert
and I directed a documentary about the transnational imagination of
Flanders, based on the novel. By screening clips of the documentary
this presentation questions the ways Flanders is being imagined to
transform the original
British story to Japanese values. I thus approach the discourse on
Occidentalism from a methodically comparative point of view so as to
think through the differences between adopting/adapting images in a
cross-cultural context.

Globalization and Cultural Identity in Film
In a globalized society media have become much of our real and
symbolic consumption and production. These everyday media
technologies and the popular entertainment are linked and shape a
global cultural memory of self-identity and life style which, at the
same time, are connected to the networks of globalized political
economy. Before this background emerges a global storytelling in
cinema that deals with branding strategies, market orientation and
tries to increase attention in a globalized media culture.

Overlapping West/East:
Journeys behind ‘Monkey: Journey to the West’ This lecture will focus
the relations of power and communication that stretching across the
globe. By studying the production/reproduction images and historical
transformation back-story of ‘Monkey: Journey to the West’, which is
a 2-minute animated video made by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett and
featured BBC’s promotional activity for Beijing Olympic Games across
TV, radio, online, mobile and interactive media, we will explore the
overlapping west/east world behind ‘Monkey: Journey to the West’: it
isn’t a singular event but connected with more relevant operations in
the field of art, culture, media and business.
