>> It shouldn't actually make any difference in mud performance.. Since everything just gets loaded into memory at boot time anyway. >> Yes, everything gets loaded into memory at boot time, however, when loaded, keywords are used and all to separate helpfiles and the like. When the helpfile's looked for, it'll spike the memory usage up quite a bit, to be honest, if you do things in just one helpfile.
Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that the mud's got to be able to FIND the helpfile somehow. For example, what if a user just typed help "the", or help "gods". How is the gods clan going to be distinguished between the god rules? Hmm? Lotsa little things like that. >>>>-rw-r--r-- 1 twhiting twhiting 139157 Jan 13 18:37 xanth.are That's the size of ONE of my helpfiles. Now imagine going through that every time you had a user search for a helpfile that was all crammed into that. And, honestly, the helps for DR, suck at the moment, so that's incredibly small for a helpfile, a decent one that is. ------------------------------------------- TJW: Head tech, Dreamless Realms Mud Personal: http://twhiting.kyndig.com Mud: http://drealms.kyndig.com Snippets http://drealms.kyndig.com/snippets Telnet telnet://drealms.kyndig.com:9275 The OLC2 Pages http://olc.kyndig.com -------------------------------------------
