That shouldn't be a problem, everything crypt outputs is printable. crypt(3): The returned value points to the encrypted password, a series of 13 printable ASCII characters (the first two characters rep- Tom should have his php echo the results of the crypt and the value he is comparing it to, etc... try to see what isn't matching up.
