It's not taxing or advanced.  You replace all declarations of the vnum
variable with long int instead of short int, and any printing formatting
with %ld inplace of %d.  Might be something else you'd have to change that I
don't remember offhand, but the compiler will tell you about it.

Also, integers are the same as short integers only on some architectures.
ANSI specifies the minimum range, not the range.
