Make sure you have a copy of ROM in the area directory. (from src, ../area) 
Make sure you have a copy of rom in your src directory. (from src, ./) . 
There IS a bin directory. It's at cd /bin  If you notice, Linux (Unix) isn't 
like Windows. There are no drive letters.  the preceding / bin means that 
it's at the lowest level possible. It might even be called 'root' level. 
where you're typically at... is your /home space. You can enter the root 
directory of your home space by typing "cd". I'm not sure what else to tell 
you... except that there IS a bin directory. The ../area problem was that 
it's in another folder, you said? try "cp startup.bak ../" then go back to 
your src dir, and 
./startup.bak &
