       Column: The last news
Title: Is There Something Going On in Europe?
       Signed by Mihai Leoveanu

It seems that the answer is YES. The beginning of the millenium itself
seemed favourable to Romania: political stability, lots of encouraging
promises coming from NATO and the European Union, and inflation rate on
a descending trend, a relative social peace and, not last, an economy
that started to move from the last years deadlock. However, in the big
offices of the world another series of tests was designed for the now
well - known area that stretches from the Black Sea to the Carpathians
and the Danube River. More or less strategic interests centred on
creating some unstable hotbeds in a region where the very stability was
an advantage in solving the real important issues, led to the
appearance of some punctual tension elements materialized in actions destined
to do good to some people and bad to Romania. The technique is simple
and well - known divide et impera but unacceptable in the third
millenium. The recipe is also simple: one takes a punctual matter
which is exaggerated in an adequate lobby by the interested party, after
which the international organisms (at an European level in our case),
are called to mediate and give verdicts. And in the last majority of
cases the verdict is on the side of that who has made the best lobby.
A more serious problem is when those who came to teach us the
democratic games act (on purpose or not) only for those who have the best
lobby. It is what happens in the case of the so-called case of the Csangos
in Moldavia that Budapest exploits with obstinacy, in spite of the
fact that the Csango people, the vast majority of them, declare themselves
Romanians and not Magyars. In that way we get to the heart of the
matter. Romania is known as a model-state in the application of adequate
politics in the case of ethnic minorities. The Magyars (and not only them)
benefit effectively from all the rights for the minorities that are
stipulated by the law, thing that cannot be said about the Romanian
minority from Ukraine, Serbia or Bulgaria. And this against all historical
hardships, able to create a feeling of distrust (generated by the
Horthyst occupation), over which we try to pass according to our propitiatory
sense that has always characterized us. However, in spite of all the
obvious facts, the very sensitive ethnic problem had priority in front
of the European authorities, and the swords peak called TYTTI
ISOOHOKANA ASUNMMAA (high messenger of the European Union) thrust itself not in
Cluj, not in Satu-Mare, not in Arad, not in Tg. Mure, but exactly in
Iai. The thrust bore a date the 5th-6th of July 2002 and a name:
The International Seminar The Origin, the Language and the Culture of
the Csango People.
A lot of people took part at the manifestation held (isn`t it?) at the
Europa Hotel (in the propitiatory spirit that the Romanian people have
shown for a long time). Under the magic wand of Mrs TYTTI ISOOHOKANA
ASUNMMAA, I repeat high representative in the minorities' matter all
the participants had the possibility to expose their point of view
related to the subject in discussion The Origin, the Culture and the
Language of the Csangos. Brackets are needed more than ever: why such a
symposium with high European officials has been held in Iai, where,
according to the official statistics of UDMR (The Democratic Union of
Magyars from Romania), the population of Magyar origin does not surpass the
0% (!) of the total population and with the occasion of the last
census only one man declared himself as being of Csango nationality? The
Bacu zone would be much more suitable, where, according to the same
statistics of UDMR, the percentage of Magyar population is of 0,62 %. And
still the city of Iai have been chosen, following some criteria that are
strange to me. The Romanian participants have presented documents that
certify that the so-called Csango people are, in fact, Romanian people
that have undergone a process of magyarization and who have emigrated
from the borders of the Austro-Hungarian empire to Moldavia, but have
never denied their Romanian origin. Instead of a conciliatory and
constructive dialogue (in the European spirit norms), the Magyar participants
limited themselves, from the very beginning, to the political sphere
invoking the lack of rights of the Csango people, which would manifest,
according to their opinion, in the absence of the religious service in
Magyar language and the educational system in the maternal language
also Magyar.
It is clear that, in this moment of the exchange of ideas, TYTTI
ISOOHOKANA ASUNMMAA should have promptly intervened and should have asked
counter-arguments for the exposed thesis to the Romanian experts in the
matter. But she didnt do that!
About Mrs. Tytti Asunmmaas attitude we shall have the opportunity to
talk in the material. The fact that seems important and grave is that a
historical and cultural symposium as The Origin, the Culture and the
Language of the Csangos could be turned into a political matter under
the protection of a European emissary. And not anyhow but in an
irreconcilable and categorical way. And not by a matter who but by those
who are interested in an ultranationalist partisanship without any
scientific foundation. Then allow me to ask myself: what was, in fact, Mrs.
Asunmmaas mission in Iai? Why has the right moderation been left in
Brussels and didnt find its place in the moderators luggage? The fact
is that, not too long after this debatable
