The
Institut d�Etudes Politiques et Internationales of the University of Lausanne invites
applications for a position as research assistant/Ph.D. student within the framework of the
research project �The Diffusion of Health Care Reforms in OECD Countries� funded by the
Swiss National Science Foundation and directed by Prof. Dietmar Braun and Dr. Fabrizio

The successful applicant will be expected to work in close collaboration with the project
directors on developing the conceptual framework and on data collection and analysis. He or
she will be associated to the publications based on the project, as well as to other academic
activities such as conferences and workshops. The successful applicant will also be expected
to write a Ph.D. dissertation in connection with the project.
In addition to a completed curriculum in political science, the position requires an interest in
the comparative analysis of welfare states and health care systems, an interest in theoretical
development, good knowledge of basic statistical tools (OLS and logistic regression) and a
willingness to learn more advanced techniques. The working language is English, but some
basic knowledge of French would be an asset.
The position is for three years from March 2005 until March 2008. The research project will
end after two years, so that the successful applicant will have the opportunity to complete
the Ph.D. dissertation during the third year. The salary is based on the directives of the Swiss
National Science Foundation, and consists of CHF 32�640 (approx. EUR 21�760) for the first
year, CHF 35�640 (approx. EUR 23�760) for the second, and CHF 38�640 (approx. EUR 25�760)
for the third. The Swiss National Science Foundation allows Ph.D. students to complete this
salary by working an additional 40%, for example as teaching assistants. The availability of
these positions for the successful candidate cannot be guaranteed, but the
