Millionaire businessman Calin Tariceanu - Romania's new prime

Calin Tariceanu, voted in as Romania's new prime minister in
parliament Tuesday, is a right-wing, millionaire businessman who is
pushing economic reforms to modernize the former communist state and
get it into the European Union.

As prime minister, Tariceanu, who reportedly has a personal fortune

He also told parliament in presenting his three-party, centre-right
government coalition Tuesday that the time has come for "fighting
corruption, guaranteeing freedom of expression and the independence
of the judiciary."
"Today ends the transition to a market economy and begins the process
of modernizing the country, a process closely linked to joining the
European Union," said Tariceanu.
Romania is seeking to join the EU in 2007 but must carry out major
reforms to fight corruption and guarantee fair trials if it is to
succeed.
Tariceanu said another priority "will be lowering taxes and
increasing pensions, with a rise of 30 percent by 2008."
Tariceanu is seeking to institute a flat income tax of 16 percent,
instead of the current system of three bands rising to 40 percent,
and a reduction of the rate of profits tax from 25 percent to 16
percent.
Tariceanu said earlier this week that this must be adopted before the
end of this year so that it could take effect from January 1, 2005.
Otherwise the reform would have to wait another year, until January
1, 2006. Such a delay carried the risk "of disillusion for the people
who want to see taxes cut quickly", he said.
Tariceanu was appointed after Bucharest Mayor Traian Basescu, like
him from the centre-right Justice and Truth alliance (DA), won
presidential elections December 12, defeating Ion Iliescu who had
ruled Romania as a Social Democrat for 11 of the 15 years since the
fall of communism in 1989 with the execution of dictator Nicolae
Ceausescu.
Tariceanu turned out to be a good negotiator, forming a coalition
with the ethnic Hungarian party and another, smaller grouping in
order to forge a parliamentary majority.
Tariceanu is a collector of cars and motorcyles, especially the old
Citroen deux-chevaux, which was France's answer to the Volkswagen
Beetle for low price and great useability.

been Citroen's import agent in Romania.

Cabinetul propus de Calin Popescu Tariceanu include atat membri cu
averi estimate la zeci sau sute de milioane de dolari, cat si oameni
politici cu sume mult mai mici in conturi, potrivit declaratiilor de
avere depuse de ei in calitate de parlamentari si a estimarilor
revistei Capital.
Propus pentru functia de vicepremier, Adriean Videanu detine doua
apartamente, o masina, 770.000 de euro in cont, dar are obligatii de
achitat (imprumut personal) de 600.000 de euro. Este presedinte CA la
doua societati (Titan Mar si Marmosim) si are actiuni sau asocieri la
sase (Titan Mar - in valoare de 461 milioane lei, Secon SA - 666
milioane lei, Pecon SA - 1,7 miliarde lei, Equity Invest SA - 960
milioane lei, Automarcus Group SA, Marmosim SA - ambele cu valoare
neprecizata). Potrivit ultimei estimari a revistei Capital, din
noiembrie 2004, averea lui Videanu se ridica la aproximativ 30 de
milioane de dolari.
George Copos, ministru de Stat propus de PUR, are, potrivit
declaratiei de avere depuse la Senat, trei terenuri intravilane,
dobandite in anii 1993, 1995 si 1999, in suprafata totala de aproape
1000 de metri patrati. El mai detine, din 1994, un teren agricol in
suprafata de 9.700 de metri patrati. Copos mai are doua apartamente,
unul din 1985 si unul din 1993, ambele in valoare de peste 1,1
miliarde de lei. De asemenea, mai are o casa de locuit, in valoare de
aproape patru miliarde de lei. Copos are si un autoturism BMW, din
anul 2001. El are conturi de 9,3 miliarde de lei, 25.500 de euro si
10.000 de dolari. Mai are creante in valoare de aproape 3,4 milioane
de euro.
Vasile Blaga, propus pentru postul de ministru al Administratiei si
Internelor, are un teren intravilan in suprafata de 378 de metri
patrati, dobandit in 1996. Are un apartament dobandit in anul 2001, a
carui valoare de impozitare este de aproape 520 de milioane de lei,
precum si o casa, din 1995, cu o valoare de impozitare de 1,7
miliarde de lei. Blaga are trei masini - un BMW, un Freelander si un
Citroen. Potrivit declaratiei sale de avere, el are un cont curent de
26.000 de dolari si 27.000 de euro, precum si un depozit colateral de
20.000 de dolari. Blaga mai detine creante in valoare de 50.000 de
euro.
Ionut Popescu, nominalizat pentru conducerea Ministerului Finantelor,
are, potrivit declaratiei de avere depusa la Senat, un teren
intravilan din 2003, in suprafata de 872 de metri patrati. El mai
detine patru apartamente dobandite intre anii 1998-2002, care au o
valoare de impozitare totala de peste 2,2 miliarde de lei, precum si
un autoturism Daewoo, fabricat in 1997. Ionut Popescu are trei
credite in valoare de 15.000 de dolari, 45.000 de dolari si 120.000
de euro. El mai este actionar la numeroase societati listate la Bursa
de Valori si la Rasdaq. Ministrul propus la Finante are in
constructie o casa in valoare de 120.000 de euro.
