Following some misleading information published in the media about the position of the European Commission (EC) regarding the current structure of eight development regions of Romania, the EC Delegation would like to bring the following clarifications:
â the European Commission considers the current organizational structure of eight development regions to be compatible with EU rules;
â Romania has already committed during the accession negotiations to maintain the present structure for the period beyond 2007, in order to ensure a smooth implementation of the Structural Funds that will be available after Romaniaâs accession to the European Union;
â if Romania wants to change this structure after 2007, this is a complex process, which needs to be done in full consultation with all involved, including the Commission.
