The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai-Razvan UNGUREANU, told the Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday that his newly installed government is determined to strengthen democracy and the rule of law, root out corruption and reinstall the freedom of the press. Some 1,000 corruption cases which had been shelved have been reopened, the minister said, and those with executive responsibility over the past years will be held accountable. "This is not a witch hunt, but a quest for our forgotten morality", said Mr Ungureanu. The European Parliament will vote in April whether or not to agree to Romania's accession to the EU in 2007.

Parliament's rapporteur on Romania, Pierre MOSCOVICI (PES, FR), raised a number of questions with the Foreign Minister, concerning the treatment of minorities, the introduction of a flat rate tax of 16%, relations with Moldova and Transdniestria, regional cooperation with the Balkans and the role Romania wishes to play within NATO. Issues raised by other MEPs included the ban on international child adoptions, environmental concerns over the Danube Delta and the heavily polluting Rosia Montana gold mine, the return of church property and border controls.
